To begin, one must understand that when I talk about furries I’m talking about adult human beings dressing up in complex mascot costumes, often with full head masks, that are modeled after anthropomorphic characters. I’m not talking about the big Nope with any beings that cannot consent in full ahead of time to what’s going on. Nothing that crosses the line into ‘oh, no’ territory here, so keep your mind in the proper gutter, please and thank you. Adult human beings in costumes, that’s what we’re discussing when we talk about furries.
Futa! Futanari!
Oh yeah, let’s break out the Japanese terminology because the words in English are just so inelegant and boring. The futa, short for ‘futanari‘, fetish got started in Japan in the Heian period, from 794 to 1185. Bet you thought it was much more recent, didn’t you? Nah, intersex persons have existed for the entire history of humankind, so of course we have words for it! A person is futanari if they have sexual characteristics common to both male and female binary genders. A person with breasts, a vulva, and also a penis, for example, is a futa. Some types of intersex conditions result in ‘ambiguous’ genitalia, or women who happen to have either a very large clit or a penis. It happens sometimes, humans are diverse.

Because intersex people exist, and humans are basically horny all the time, the futanari fetish is popular, and becoming more popular as time goes on! Welcome to the internet, where previously obscure ideas from Japanese folk tales become the food for the masses, and weird fiction from Supernatural (the TV show) creates entire new genres. Yes, omegaverse fic can also include futa. And furries frequently love to blend and mix elements from both omegaverse and futanari fantasies with their anthropomorphic characters.
