One of the trickiest things to do as an adult is figure out how to pick a sex toy. Imagine yourself at the local seedy ‘adult’ shop, or maybe one of those new high-gloss fancy boutique stores that caters to bridal showers, staring at a wall full of dicks. How do you pick one?! Never fear, I’m going to take you by the hand and lead you gently through the wondrous world of dildos, butt plugs, cheap lingerie and shitty floggers to help you find the perfect toy to bring home and enjoy.
How To Pick A Sex Toy

Join Whore School on Sunday, July 26, 2026 at 11 pm Eastern to learn for yourself how to select the best sex toy for whatever you have planned. That, by the way, is where you start your search. What do you want your toy to do for you? What’s the scenario or fantasy you’d like to explore, and what sensations are you interested in? There’s no harm in browsing your local purveyor of fine erotic goods to see if anything sparks interest, and building a fun night in based on the toy you select, either.
Materials Matter
If you’ve listened to the Whore School episode on Sex Toy Safety, you already know that there is no agency in the US that monitors sex toys for safety. Not in construction, not materials, no oversight other than what already exists for things like batteries or individual components. Plus, the vast majority of sex toys are manufactured in other nations, that also don’t have robust regulations for safety standards. This means you need to be an informed consumer, and pay attention when shopping for a new sex toy to make sure you buy something relatively safe to use!
Silicone or PVC?
There’s a lot of dildos and dicks out there made from PVC. Polyvinyl chloride is cheap, makes a solid yet flexible shape when cured, and can be molded at scale to produce a LOT of dicks in a short amount of time. It can be colored in every shade of the rainbow. It also degrades over time, can off-gas harmful byproducts, and some folks can be allergic to it. Silicone is a little more expensive, but ultimately has all the same positives as the PVC options in terms of shape, flexibility, and color, though it can require more steps to manufacture and cure properly. That’s why the silicone toys are more expensive! Properly cured high quality silicone is completely body safe, too, with no off-gassing and no degradation over time.
Knock-offs and Scams
Sadly, in the sex toy world, there are knock-offs, scams, and cheapskates. I know, a lightly regulated industry has people who cut corners, lie, and try to scam you out of your money?! Shocking. In yet another Buyer Beware moment, when picking out a new sex toy you need to keep in mind not just material safety concerns, but also try to be somewhat aware of scammers. Find a badass looking new toy, that says it’s got a powerful motor, wifi connectivity, remote controlled, and it’s under $50?!! How about that cute chastity cage for ten bucks? Just remember that quality toys are sold from reputable companies with an online presence, reviews going back more than six months, and are expensive. It’s true, the cheap things can be fun! But they will not last, may not be made of what the sales listing claimed, and could break in unexpected ways at the worst time.
